How we handle it

The same four steps every time, so you always know what’s next.

  1. 1

    Match the exact drive

We check your model for the slot type (2.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe), the supported length (2230, 2242 or 2280) and the PCIe generation, so the new drive fits and runs at full speed.

  2. 2

    Protect your data first

Before a single screw comes out, your files are backed up. If the old drive is already failing, getting your data off it comes before anything else.

  3. 3

    Clone it, or start fresh

Cloning keeps everything exactly as it was (programs, settings, desktop), only faster. Prefer a clean slate? We do a fresh Windows install and copy your files back.

  4. 4

    Test before hand-off

We check the new drive’s health readings, confirm TRIM is enabled, time the startup and walk you through what changed.

  5. Ready when you are.

Most people start with a two-line message.

SATA or NVMe: which does your computer take?

Not every SSD is the same. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD tops out around 550 MB/s and fits almost any laptop or desktop from the last fifteen years. That is still several times faster than a hard drive for everyday work. NVMe M.2 drives run over PCIe at roughly 3,500 MB/s (PCIe 3.0) to 7,000 MB/s (PCIe 4.0), but only in machines with the right slot.

Some M.2 slots accept SATA drives only, and many thin laptops take the short 2230 or 2242 sizes. We confirm the exact fit up front, so you never end up with a drive your machine can’t use.

Running out of space?

Hard drive space expansion rarely means starting over. Most desktops have room for a second drive: a fast SSD for Windows and programs, plus a large drive for photos and video. On a laptop we move you to a bigger SSD and carry everything across. For archives you seldom open, a network drive (NAS) or cloud storage keeps them safe and off your main disk.

Your old drive stays yours

Everything on it belongs to you, so it comes back to you. Keep it as a spare copy of your old setup, or store it somewhere safe. Your data never leaves your hands without your say-so.

Questions about SSD & hard drive upgrades

Still unsure? Call or text (407) 773-0904 and describe what’s happening.

Will I lose my files or programs?

No. We back everything up first, then clone your old drive to the new one, so Windows, your programs and your files come across exactly as they were.

How much faster will it be?

Going from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD is the most noticeable upgrade most people ever make: startup, updates and opening apps all get dramatically quicker. If you already have an SSD, we’ll tell you honestly whether a faster one is worth it.

Is my computer too old for an SSD?

Almost any laptop or desktop with a SATA connection can take one. If the rest of the machine is past saving, we’ll say so before you spend a dollar on it.

Can you upgrade an all-in-one or a small office PC?

Usually, yes. All-in-ones and compact office desktops often hide a 2.5-inch bay or an M.2 slot behind the back panel. Send us the model and we’ll confirm what fits.
